Cost of Sales
Cost of Sales (or Cost of Revenue in a SaaS context) represents the direct costs incurred to generate closed revenue — including sales representative compensation and commissions, pre-sales technical resources, travel, proposal development, and solution design effort. Tracking Cost of Sales against closed deal value gives sales leadership a real measure of deal efficiency: some deals that appear profitable on gross revenue become marginal when the actual cost to close is calculated. CRM data — particularly activity logs, time tracking integrations, and deal stage histories — provides the inputs for Cost of Sales analysis, enabling finance and sales operations to identify deal types, segments, or sales motions that deliver the strongest margin on sales investment.
